Hotel description

Ofir ****

4-star | Ofir

The spacious 4-star Hotel Ofir enjoys a privileged position at the head of a pine-forested peninsula surrounded by fine unspoilt sandy beaches. In addition to a splendid wooden-floored ballroom, it also features extensive lawns surrounding an attractive outdoor pool and a restaurant with wonderful sea views. Until recently access to the hotel by air from the UK was restricted to only a couple of airports. Consequently the hotel's guests were largely from Portugal itself, Spain, or France. Recently however the number of UK airports offering Oporto as a destination has increased significantly, finally opening up an exploration of this wonderfully picturesque region to most of the country.

Rooms: 191 bedrooms with ensuite bath and shower, balcony, air conditioning, satellite TV, direct dial phone and mini bar

Other Facilities:  Buffet restaurant with local & international cuisine, lounge bar with occasional entertainment, large outdoor pool surrounded by a garden sun lounging area, bowling alley & card room, large private ballroom with waiter service, and direct access to miles and miles of unspoilt sandy beaches.

The Minho

The Minho region, that lies inland from the hotel, is affectionately known by the Portuguese both as ‘the cradle of Portugal’ and ‘the green heart of Portugal’. It was here, in the 12th century, that the first king of Portugal was born, that the nation of Portugal first declared itself an independent entity, and that the fundamentals of the identity of Portugal and its people began to evolve. It is equally the country's most verdant region, traversed as it is by a number of rivers that are fed by much of the run-off from Iberia's vast central mountain ranges. On both counts it earns much affection in the hearts of many Portuguese. Equally endearing is the frozen-in-time sleepy ambience of the Minho today. Having lacked in strategic significance for several centuries and having remained largely agrarian rather than industrialising, it has in many respects avoided the aesthetic degradation that has afflicted a number of other regions of the country. It features several of the country’s best preserved and most beautiful historic cities and is also a region where centuries-old traditions of folk music and artisanship are very much alive. Scenically, it is one of the most delightful regions of the country, characterised by vast forests, rolling hills, small-scale agriculture, and endless lines of grape vines.

Optional Excursion Possibilities

Oporto & The Douro: The beautiful granite riverside city of Oporto has been home to the Portuguese Port Wine trade for over 250 years. Its history as a significant city and trading port however extends all the way back to the Romans. Included in our tour are a port wine lodge, the beautiful stock exchange building, the opulent São Fransisco Church and a short Douro cruise.

Braga & Guimarães: The historic city of Braga is known as ‘the Rome of Portugal’ for the number of impressive baroque ecclesiastical buildings it houses. Medieval Guimarães meanwhile was Portugal’s first capital and has been affectionately dubbed ‘the cradle of the nation’.

Barcelos & Ponte de Lima: The attractive country town of Barcelos is home to Portugal’s largest and best known market. Ponte de Lima is a delightful historic riverside town.
